Workshop Description:

NOTE: Though this workshop is highly focused on support and care of supervisees, the material covered will also be beneficial for direct client care as well.

This unique workshop is designed to enhance mental health supervisor’s ability to incorporate DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) values in supervision.  Participants will be able to identify practical strategies for creating a more inclusive and affirming supervision experience for both the supervisee and the supervisor.

Participants will gain, or enhance, a comprehensive understanding of DEIB principles and learn culturally competent practices to improve supervisee learning outcomes. Additionally, this workshop will address the importance of acknowledging intersectionality and the specific needs of supervisees who belong to multiple marginalized groups.

Practitioners will learn and apply ethical guidelines for curating culturally competent and DEIB approaches to create a supportive and affirming environment.

OBJECTIVES

1. Understanding Cultural Competence: Define cultural competence and identify key components of culturally competent supervision. As well as discuss the impact of cultural competence on supervisee development and client outcomes.

2. Promoting Social and Transformative Justice via Diversity and Inclusion: Explain the concepts of diversity and inclusion and develop strategies to foster a diverse and inclusive supervisory environment.

3. Fostering a Sense of Belonging: Explain the concept of belonging and identify factors that contribute to or detract from a sense of belonging for supervisees.

4. Ethical Considerations in Culturally Competent Supervision: Discuss ethical dilemmas that may arise in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

5. Enhancing Supervisory Skills: Develop effective communication strategies for discussing cultural competence, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging with supervisees. 6. Evaluating and Improving Practices: Implement continuous improvement processes and utilize feedback from supervisees to enhance supervision practices.

NOTE: Though this workshop is highly focused on support and care of supervisees, the material covered will also be beneficial for direct care of clients as well.  

This continuing education workshop is designed to enhance mental health supervisor’s ability to support LGBTQIA+ supervisees. This workshop will delve into the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ supervisees and provide practical strategies for creating a more inclusive and affirming supervision experience for both the supervisee and the supervisor.

Participants will gain, or enhance, a comprehensive understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities, recognize the impact of minority stress and stigma, and learn culturally competent practices to improve supervisee learning outcomes. Additionally, this workshop will address the importance of acknowledging intersectionality and the specific needs of supervisees who belong to multiple marginalized groups.

Reflecting best practices in mental health care and supervision, by the end of the workshop, attendees will be empowered with the knowledge and tools needed to provide compassionate, effective, inclusive and culturally sensitive services to LGBTQIA+ supervisees.

  1. Understanding Identity Development: Identify challenges and strategies in supporting LGBTQIA+ supervisees' identity development and its relevance to professional development.
  2. Recognizing and Addressing Minority Stress: Develop strategies to mitigate the effects of minority stress in supervision and clinical practice.
  3. Implementing Trauma-Informed Support: Develop trauma-informed approaches to support LGBTQIA+ supervisees and clients effectively.
  4. Enhancing Supervisory Skills: Create a supervision practice that integrates identity development, minority stress, and trauma-informed support.
  5. Promoting Inclusive Practices: Identify barriers to inclusive supervision and clinical practice and implement procedures that support diversity and inclusion in supervision.
  6. Evaluating Outcomes and Effectiveness: Learn ways to obtain and utilize feedback on trauma-informed, minority stress-aware, and identity development-focused supervision approaches.
